Foundation Recovery Systems team members, along with family members, spent their Mother's Day morning walking for a cure in Moberly, Missouri's "Mother's Day 5K - Run for Her Life."

This is the third year for the event that was organized to raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of mammogram screenings. The proceeds were donated to the United Way of Randolph County to support the Randolph County Health Department Mammography Program which provides financial assistance to women and men who would otherwise not be able to afford a mammography.

FRS team members who participated in the walk were: Sharon Martin, Kim Martin, Gary Hook, John Sumpter and his daughter, Will Dayton and his wife and children, and Chris Meyer. It was a great way to honor mothers and all those who are affected by cancer.

After the monstrous rain, winds, and tornado that hit this weekend, FRS finds home maintenance and preparation of the utmost importance. The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-4 tornado to have hit parts of Missouri Friday, damaging some 750 homes in its path. Advantages of Encapsulating a Crawl Space

Many homeowners don’t realize it, but most older homes are subjected to outside elements; mold, mildew, moisture, water, decay and propagate rot. These elements also tend to attract and host various insects and rodents. An encapsulation system is intended to help control the moisture from the infiltration by pests.

Elements of Encapsulation

As several studies have shown, humidity and excess moisture can form mold and mildew, and exposure to such growths can be very unhealthy to adults and children—especially those with breathing conditions and/or asthma.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends encapsulation to recondition the crawl space and better control moisture throughout the space.

Reconditioning: The materials and process used for encapsulation tend to vary from contractor to contractor; but the basic procedure is to seal all openings on the sidewalls. This includes all doors, windows and vents leading to the exterior of the home or building.

It’s been estimated that 50% of the air being breathed on the first floor is from the crawl space. Digging Out of the Snow

Mid-Missouri was hit hard with almost 20 inches of snow, sleet and blustery winds on February 1^st and 2^nd. Local businesses and schools were closed and you didn't find many people outside of their homes on Tuesday or Wednesday.

A few helpful hands from Foundation Recovery Systems braved the cold temperatures to help neighbors, family and friends during the recovery period. Jeff W. Martin, owner of Foundation Recovery Systems; along with his son & crew member, Jeffrey; General Manager, Gary Hook; and FRS Mechanic, John Sumpter, worked for three days and into the nights clearing driveways and entryways.

There were many stranded people who were happy to see the FRS truck and equipment pull into their neighborhoods.

Columbia, MO â Foundation Recovery Systems is hosting an engineering training for design professionals interested in being introduced to helical foundation systems, helical soil nails and push piers. The training is a 5-hour presentation being held at the Columbia Country Club in Columbia, MO on April 13; and at the Hilton Garden Inn in Independence, MO on April 14.

Employees at Foundation Recovery Systems participated in the Military Care Package Program sponsored by Altrusa International of Moberly, Missouri. Every employee brought in items for the program over a two week period. Donations included snacks, puzzles, personal hygiene items, batteries, and flashlights.

Barb Riley, Shari Pretz, & Nancy Meals, members of the Altrusa chapter, stopped by to pick up the items on Friday, November 5. In 2009, Altrusa International of Moberly was able to send 44 boxes of items to the soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. This year, with the help of Foundation Recovery Systems and other community contributors, the local chapter of Altrusa was able to send 59 boxes to our troops.

The 2010 Foundation Supportworks Convention included all-day training on Thursday and Friday at the Basement Systems, Inc. headquarters in Seymour, Conn. There was an award ceremony held at the Bushnell Theater in Hartford, Conn. on Thursday evening where all those in attendance heard from guest speaker, Liz Murray who is the face to the Lifetime Emmy nominated movie, "Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story".

Employees Receive Awards As A Part Of Annual Employee Recognition

Foundation Recovery Systems loves acknowledging the achievements of our hard working employees, which is why we are sure to give out awards each year. We recently "knighted" our Employee of the Year and our Salesman of the Year.

Employee of the Year went to General Manager, Gary Hook, who has worked with Foundation Recovery Systems for 18 years and counting! Gary demonstrates his skills and commitment through his willingness to assist in every department of the company. He's certainly had a diverse experience at FRS from working as a crew member during FRS' infancy, to production, sales, and now he's the General Manager.

Salesman of the Year was awarded to David Brown who's been with the company for three years. For the past two years David has acquired the top sales numbers at FRS. He works very well with customers and is of great value to our team.

This event was held to benefit the local children's Dream Factory, Inc. chapter, which provides the funds to fulfill the dreams of chronically and critically ill children.

Foundation Recovery Systems (FRS) has also been able to purchase a custom painting made by a 10-year-old Dream Factory child. The painting now hangs in the company's home office.

Why Basement Floor Cracks Leak

One of the primary ways that water passes underneath a basement floor from outside is through the soil surrounding the foundation. This is because the soil that was excavated and then backfilled when your home was first built will always be looser and more absorbent of water than the hard-packed earth around the home will ever be. This is known as the “clay bowl effect”.

The clay bowl effect leads to a false water table underneath your home- one that leaks down around the walls and collects underneath the floor. Hydrostatic pressure will cause the ground water to push up through the floor cracks.

Stopping Leaks from Floor Cracks

To properly stop basement floor cracks from leaking, the water should be first intercepted around the edges of the basement. A perimeter drainage system including a modernized French drain and a sump pump are the most appropriate way to redirect this water and send it away from your home.

Once the perimeter drain has been created and a sump pump is installed, the water entering from floor cracks should be greatly reduced, if not eliminated entirely. However, if there is a crack that has shown serious leakage and is a concern, a drainage line can be run from the crack area to the sump pump.
